Byblos

Jbeil / Byblos, and formerly called Gebal or Goubal, located about 37 kilometers north of Beirut, on a promontory at the edge of the sea. Archaeological excavations by Pierre Montet and especially by Maurice Dunand, have discovered traces at least seventeen major phases or periods inhabited from prehistoric times to the Arab conquest. Jbeil is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It is listed, since 1984, as a World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
